Goren and Eames return to the Major Case Squad after a year-long absence and must determine if a banker was murdered or committed suicide. They discover the bank's only client is the Catholic Church and dig into a scandal and cover-up linked to the murder.

Le corps de Theresa Esperna, une employée de banque, est retrouvé sans vie. Pour les policiers, tout laisse à penser qu'il s'agit d'un banal suicide. Mais en regardant de plus près les activités de la jeune femme, les enquêteurs font d'étonnantes découvertes. Car l'unique client de l'établissement bancaire où travaillait Theresa est l'Eglise catholique. La mission de l'entreprise est de s'occuper des transferts d'argent de son client vers les personnes victimes d'abus sexuels perpétrés par des prêtres. Bobby Goren et Alex Eames tombent sur un mouvement financier suspect. Ce qui ressemblait à un suicide pourrait être en réalité un meurtre...
